Being Fuzzy Or Not Being As Fuzzy When We Age

Nestled on one of the branches of my mother's Christmas tree every year is a little fuzzy - well, mostly fuzzy bunny rabbit.

fuzzy bunny

As you can tell from the photos, his fuzziness is missing in spots. At one time, the little bunny had fuzzy fur covering everywhere including the now very worn toes, nose and ears. I think that the bunny is more beautiful now than when it was brand new.

You may be thinking that I need glasses so that I can see the very splotchy bunny more clearly. Let me assure you that I'm wearing my glasses and can see just fine. Have you ever read a book called The Velveteen Rabbit by Margery Williams? It is a story about a stuffed rabbit that was the favorite toy of a young boy and thus became very worn, even more worn than my mother's fuzzy bunny.

In the story, the Velveteen Rabbit is just a toy, but wishes to be a Real rabbit more than anything. At one point of the story he is told that:

"Generally, by the time you are real, most of your hair has been loved off, and your eyes drop out and you get loose in the joints and very shabby. But these things don't matter at all, because once you are Real you can't be ugly, except to people who don't understand."

When my niece, Brittany, was a little girl, my mother's fuzzy bunny was one of her favorite things. Each time we visited Mom, Brittany would hold, talk for, talk to, sing to, stare at, pet, hug and kiss the fuzzy bunny. After years of all those kisses, the fuzzy bunny had a lot of his fuzz loved off. To Brittany, the fuzzy bunny was not only one of the most precious possessions of my mother, but he had become Real to her.

Obviously, when I see the somewhat fuzzy bunny now, my mind is filled with memories of a beautiful little girl affectionately holding it for hours on end. I'm sure it is quite apparent why I think the bunny is absolutely beautiful.

I believe the same concept applies to people. Everyone can't look like movie stars and models, not even the movie stars and models. We all know that photos are touched up to make the people look perfect, but there isn't any perfect person. Besides, if we all looked the same, this would be a very boring world. Our diversity keeps us interesting and unique.

We are special. No one else has been, is or will ever be just like us.

As we grow older, parts of our bodies begin to fluff out, sag down, wrinkle, crinkle, splotch, creak and a hundred other things. It doesn't make us
ugly except to people who don't understand. By the time the candles on the birthday cake start to look like a bonfire, we have acquired a wealth of information and experience that we can share. Our physical bodies may fail us, but our souls are still quite vibrant. That is really the part that counts.

Beneath the skin and inside our continually aging body is our soul. Have we loved from the depths of our soul and given so much love away that our fuzziness has been worn off? Hmmm...a very interesting question. Well, I refuse to be old inside no matter how old I get on the outside. When I think of myself, in my mind's eye I see an innocent twenty-five year old with long flowing red hair and unblemished alabaster skin dotted with faint freckles. I was so full of hope, life and youthfulness.

I no longer have a twenty-five year old body and my fuzziness is worn off in many places. I can honestly say that I have loved and been loved so much that my soul feels full. As far as my constant changing body goes, I don't really mind that it doesn't look twenty-five any more and the people that matter don't mind either. They think I am beautiful and love me - the Real me.

What about you...are you missing some fuzziness? Have you opened yourself up to be loved? Do you have that warm, peaceful feeling of love for others?

Yes? Then you know exactly what I'm talking about! However, if you answered the question negatively, just remember...It's not too late to start now.

to which fate binds you,
and love the people with
whom fate brings you together,
but do so with all your heart."

The Snowy Trip That Broke My Nose

It will be a trip to Colorado that I won't ever forget.

Waiting and hoping to get pregnant is not easy, so when I finally got pregnant with Alyssa after nearly ten years, "ecstatic" doesn't even begin to describe my emotions. It was a bumpy pregnancy and birth, followed by eighteen months of nursing and then gall bladder surgery. There was so many new opportunities, challenges and changes, that I desperately needed a vacation.

Destination: Colorado

Alyssa's father's sister lived in Colorado and I knew it would be fun to enjoy snow. So after much planning and loading everything into the van that I could imagine we might possibly need, the long trip from Texas to Colorado with Alyssa (under 2 years old) and Brittany (7 years old) started.

The whole trip up there was fun, but eventually we reached our destination.

In Colorado Springs, Colorado, we enjoyed the Garden of The Gods rock formations.

We also saw some amazing scrap metal art structures that decorated someone's home.

I remember Brittany kept saying, "This is so cool!" while she ran around in the snow. I thought the sculptures were rather cool too, but I wouldn't want them in my yard. I mean really, imagine a big chicken head and neck greeting you at the curb each day.

Okay....no.

I wanted to stay in a hotel so that I wouldn't have to worry about cleaning up after everyone since it was supposed to be my vacation too. Of course, everyone didn't understand my thinking, but in the end, we stayed in a hotel.

It is hard to believe that the tiny little girls in the photos are now 18 and 24 years old.

Brittany loved the snow and ate it throughout the whole trip. I kept having to warn her to make sure she didn't eat anything dirty because every time I turned around, her face was covered with snow.

Not only did Brittany eat the snow, she played with it and...

rolled around in it.

Maybe it is a redhead thing in our family, but she just couldn't get enough of the snow.

Alyssa, however, didn't really like it that much. The first time she stood in the snow, she lifted her arms for us to take her out of it. Thank goodness the good snow genes eventually matured in her and she does love snow now.

Every untouched spot covered with snow was the perfect place for yet another snow angel.

Of course, you can't take small children to snow country without providing an opportunity for slipping and sliding down a large hill.

Brittany loved tubing!

"One more time," must have been said a hundred times.

Breaks and resting between turns down the hill always included snow angels.

I was less adventurous and used the fact that I needed to hold Alyssa as an excuse.

Alyssa, however, was game and loved riding down the hill with her father.

With her big green eyes looking up at me, I couldn't resist Brittany's plea to ride with her and so the double redheads flew down the snowy hill on a little red sled.

I really preferred being pulled around. With my accident prone nature, it just seemed safer.

When snow covers everything and the sun shines, the reflecting light is blinding. I spent a whole lot of time squinting during our Colorado trip.

What was with those hideous boots?

No matter how careful I try to be, accidents find their way in my life.

My ex-in-laws home was a split level house which means that it had stairs and in this case, they were carpet covered.

One evening while happily speeding up the stairs, my foot slipped...

I was leaning forward...

I couldn't get my hands in front of me to catch my fall...

I landed nose first on the edge of the step...

The skin on my nose split...

Blood flew every direction...

My nose broke...

I felt pain beyond description...

And I passed out...

Laying face down on the stairs.

I ended up with two very black-blue-purple eyes and bright blue stitches on my nose. I was truly a beautiful sight to behold. (rolling eyes) Of course, I have never been able to live down the fact that I broke my nose going "up" a flight of stairs.

I learned a valuable lesson that day: Don't run up stairs and always use the handrail.

I love snow and since there has been no sign of it here in Virginia this year, (looking out the window at the rain falling) I can at least enjoy it through this journey back in time. Yeah, I remember that it feels so peaceful to be surrounded by the lovely whiteness and hear the crunch of snow underfoot.

The Redhead Turns 23

If you are looking for the Tell The Truth Thursday post, you won't find it until next week because this is a very special day.

Today I confuse everyone who only looks at the pictures and doesn't bother to read the words of my post. It happens every time I post pictures of this beautiful redhead.

On December 2, 1987, my little redheaded niece, Brittany, was born.

Brittany

Brittany was a sweet baby.

Brittany

I had the privilege of having Brittany and my sister live with me for eleven years,
so I was able to enjoy motherhood without giving birth!

Brittany was a very creative child and loved to color, draw, paint and read.

Brittany Brittany

She has a gentle soul with a tender heart.

Brittany Brittany

I have a million memories of being with Brittany.
I even remember her saying,
"Let me spread my dress out.
I want a picture with a puffy dress."

Brittany

Every Christmas while everyone was gone,
we would make presents.
Brittany loved keeping the gifts secret and would never tell anyone
all the crafty things we were creating.
One year we covered the table with giant art paper
and she made reindeer ornaments out of wooden pegs.
She concentrated on covering every spot with paint.
Her "paint clothes" was Evan's old shirt and it fit her like a giant dress.

Brittany

She always took her time and enjoyed each step of the process.

Brittany

We laughed, sang and talked all day long while she made the presents.

Brittany

Brittany loved to help do any and everything.
She helped build the furniture and then enjoyed cleaning up the mess.
Yes, she was a very special and delightful child and
I loved spending my time with her each day.

Brittany

She also loved understanding how everything worked
and was quick to say,
"Let's open it up and see what's wrong!"
whether it was first thing in the morning or late at night.

Brittany

Brittany loved vacations
especially the trips to snowy places like Colorado.

Brittany

Today Brittany still has the same tender heart.
It is funny that she has dyed her hair every shade of red
even though she is a natural redhead!

Thank you for loving me so much and filling my days with so much joy.
I remember every hug and kiss you ever gave me.
I love you so very much Brittany.

Happy Birthday!
I hope the coming year will be the happiest yet.

Brittany

Love Always,
Your Auntie-Mom
