Just Three Words

It's true that only three words can cause you to laugh hysterically. Let me explain.

I've been to just about ever state in the United States and there is something beautifully amazing about each one. When Alyssa was younger, I needed to have a game that we could play in the car that held her interest, didn't require any game pieces and added to our interaction with one another.

I have always loved words. Not necessarily speaking them, but how the letters are arranged, the definitions and how the combination of words can convey our thoughts and feelings to one another.

Always looking for opportunities to teach my daughter, I created a fun way to assist her in letter recognition, imagination, spelling and grammar while we traveled. I call it the License Plate game and it can be played on a short trip to the grocery store or on long vacations.

This is how it works...A license plate usually has at least three letters. Each letter is used as the first letter of a word and the three words should make a statement. As an example, if the letters on the license plate are YSH, then my words in the statement could be "You're So Hot" or "Yucky Spinach Hoagie."

Over the years, our laughter has rocked the car. Many times we have laughed until our sides hurt and tears streamed down our faces because of the funny word combinations we created. Alyssa has quite an imagination! There were even times that we choked on our drinks or the liquid rushed out of our nose because someone unexpectedly blurted out three words that were absolutely hilarious. Like I said, this game has been a blast for my family.

I thought we would have a little fun today. Let's pretend we are traveling together in a car playing the License Plate game. Post your word combinations in the comments and let's enjoy our creativity. Post as many as you desire for each license plate. You will see that the answers can be very funny. Here we go...

Kill The Cows

Cow

Every weekend was spent with Mam-Maw and Gran-Gran, my mother's parents. We would make the two hour drive to the country to spend the weekend with them. We also always visited my other grandparents and great-grandparents who also lived in the same town. Beautiful and lasting memories were made during those visits...truly enough memories to last a lifetime.

On the two hour trip, Dad would always play Kill The Cows with me. This is how it was played. We both would pick which side of the road would be ours for the whole two hour trip. During the drive, every time we saw a cow on our side, we added it to our running tally. Dad gave me a little metal counter since I couldn't count very far if at all because we started playing this game when I was three years old. The object of the game was to have the most cows at the end of the trip...HOWEVER, there was a catch. Every time you saw a graveyard on the other person's side of the road, it would Kill The Cows for them!

I always lost! It wasn't until a few years ago, when visiting my dad, that I finally realized why I always lost. Being the adult, Dad had memorized where all the graveyards were and also knew the cow pasture's locations. He would divert my attention so that I would miss the cemetery on his side or he chose the side of the car that had the graveyard on my side at the end of the trip. Obviously, Dad loved winning. I laugh every time I remember Kill The Cows and Dad's winning obsession.

Padiddle

Padiddle

Driving in the car with children can be a blast. There are lots of games like Slug Bug that can be played in the car by everyone, old and young alike.

Alyssa loves to play Padiddle. You hit the roof of the car and yell "Padiddle" every time you see a car with a burned out front head light. Needless to say, she wins all the time.

I was quite excited when she started driving because I was sure that I would begin to win at Padiddle. Here she is, a new driver, concentrating on the road, and trying to maneuver a car, so I was sure she couldn't add winning at Padiddle to her list.

Did I mention that she always wins at Padiddle?

Having her drive the car didn't make any difference to her adeptness at winning Padiddle.

I still lose!

Winning at Padiddle with Alyssa is like an elusive dream...

I just can't win that game...

Unless I ride with Ronnie Milsap or Stevie Wonder.

Slug Bug

Slug Bug

Growing up, whether we saw a Volkswagen Beetle coming, going or parked, we would "slug" the arm of the person driving in the car with us and yell "SLUG BUG!"

Since I was brainwashed that this was a fun game (don't get me wrong because it is fun), I taught it to my daughter too except that I never "slugged" her in the arm. Instead we did more of a "Princess tap" on the arm. I'm sure that doesn't surprise you a bit. Anyway, she loved it and I would often ignore "bugs" so that she would win.

Now she is older and driving, so in a way I have an advantage because I can really look around.

Wrong.

My child has the eyes of an eagle. I think she can see a Volkswagen Beetle fifty miles down the road! I never win!

The car will be silent and then I hear her say softly, "slug bug." She doesn't even punch me in the arm.

It is more like...you lost.

Again.

I taught her too well!

Where are my bifocals?

Red Light, Green Light

children playing

"An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure."

Sometimes while sitting at an intersection waiting for my turn watching cars run the red light, I remember that fun little game I played in the backyard with the little girl next door called "Red Light, Green Light." It was a simple game and is played as follows:

traffic lightOne player is chosen to be Red Light. He should stand about 25 yards from the other players, with his back turned towards them.

The other players line up shoulder to shoulder behind him. The goal is to get close enough to tap "Red Light" on the shoulder. The catch is that they can move only when he says, "Green Light."

To start, "Red Light" closes his eyes and yells, "Green Light!" Players run at top speed toward him until he yells, "Red Light!" and turns around as fast as he can to see if he can catch someone moving. The instant the other players hear "Red Light!" they must stop running. Anyone "Red Light" sees still moving when he turns around must return to the starting line.

This is repeated until a player gets close enough to tap the "Red Light" on the shoulder when his back is turned. This player wins and becomes the next "Red Light."

If only driving was as simple as this game. Everyone should obey the "Red Light."
