How Can A Stay-At-Home Mother Be Bored?

beach ball

A woman's home is her castle and domain. She usually cleans, cooks, decorates, rearranges, repairs, works, plays and relaxes within the walls of her home. Sometimes women choose to stay home to raise their children instead of working outside of the home. I was one of those women.

After finally getting pregnant, surviving the pregnancy and birth, I found my home to be a haven. For a long time I was healing physically, emotionally and mentally. My body had been to Hell and back during the nine months I carried my daughter only to have even more trauma during her birth. Being able to take naps, putter and relax was just what my weakened body needed. Plus, nursing was a breeze because I was unhurried and very comfortable. Staying home definitely healed my broken body.

Watching other families grow one child after the next was a nightmare when I didn't think I would ever be able to have my own child. People unintentionally and sometimes intentionally said the most unkind and thoughtless things to me. After having Alyssa, I was able to let my heart heal from the wounds. I basked in the love of my child and enjoyed the emotional high from my motherhood. I watched and marveled at every nuance of her body and personality. Nothing was more exciting or fulfilling than times spent with my child.

Mentally I remained challenged with new opportunities every day. I learned to be an immaculate and extremely organized homemaker. Everything ran like clockwork. By 9:00 in the morning, the house was clean - beds made, bathrooms cleaned, house vacuumed, baseboards washed, windows cleaned, laundry going. I enjoyed all the tasks that made my home sparkle and shine, but finished them quickly so that I could dedicate most of the day to my daughter. Between nursing, naps and staring at her, I thought of ways to improve my home and self. Even with all the chores, every day was filled with so much fun!

I was never bored.

I have a hard time understanding how a woman feels unfulfilled when she stays home with the little lives she has brought into the world. Isn't there joy and a sense of accomplishment at raising loving, kind and intelligent children? Unless home schooled, children eventually go to school outside the home and leave a mother all alone to become engaged in any adult activity that she sees fit. There are so many opportunities for a mother to enlighten her children to the world. Being a stay-at-home-mother is an active role. She needs to teach her children and learn their personality and needs. That is not an easy task nor can it be accomplished while engrossed in chatting on the phone all day, watching television all day or any other activity that completely draws all her attention away from the child ALL DAY.

Women who find staying at home boring need to go look in the mirror. Your home is as exciting as you make it and that requires effort. Motherhood is the most important job you will ever have - you are shaping the life of another human being. Everything you invest into the child is soaked up like a sponge and never forgotten. That sponge can be filled with good, bad or indifference, but the mother who is at home, day after day, hour after hour and minute after minute has a huge influence on what gets soaked up.

Being bored is simply an attitude. Life, motherhood and staying at home is just what a woman makes of it. If she is bored, it is time to expand the horizons and try something new. Not only will you stop being bored, but you will be a better person and mother to the child/children that watch your every move. Your actions are indelibly imprinted in their minds and not a thing you say goes unheard. Mothering is an art that requires time to practice and perfect just like playing a musical instrument.

I haven't posted this to judge anyone, but I am baffled by the "me" and "right now" generation. Take the time to develop and hone your skills as a homemaker and mother. Yes, motherhood does require skills if you want to excel at it if you want to really be a great mother. If you were trying to get a raise at a job outside the home, would you prop your feet up on the desk and turn on the soap operas? I doubt it.

One other thing...I want to say something to the woman with the four year old child in the grocery store tonight. Not only did I hear what you were saying to someone on your cellphone, but so did your four year old child. How do you think you made your innocent child feel when she heard you say, "I stay home all day long with a boring four year old who says 'Mommy, Mommy, Mommy' until I want to jump off a tall building. I would be so happy if I could afford to dump her in a daycare."

Yeah, sorry to say, but at that moment, I wished you HAD jumped off a tall building.

Look Daddy!

Our children are always wanting us to see their new discoveries. Even now, my daughter will say, "Mom, look!" Of course, I immediately give her my undivided attention.

I think it scores me points especially if I don't say "One second." Right, Alyssa?

Last year I made Alyssa's prom dress, but this year we sat in front of the computer monitor and looked through so-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o many dresses trying to find the right one. This was after Alyssa had already perused the internet gathering together the "maybes" for me to see.

Well, we have ordered one, so when prom is over I will have to post the pictures because I am sure she will be lovely as usual. Anyway, back to the undivided attention thing.

I can just hear these little girls saying, "Look Daddy! We just found kittens."

I would probably scream and you know what would happen!!!

Ms. Gallagher and Yuken Teruya

Ms. Gallagher.

I don't know if that is how you spell her name because it was a long time ago, but she changed my life. She was my beautiful, young, blond, sophisticated and elegant second grade teacher who always wore stylish dresses. Ms. Gallagher knew how and loved to teach young children. She cultivated the desire to fill life with learning. In her young, orange haired, female student, Ms. Gallagher focused just the right amount attention to motivate her towards excellence.

That was the beginning of my love for school and learning.

Thank you Ms. Gallagher where ever you are for this insatiable desire within me to learn and to find beauty in all forms of art.

Once I told you that I was like a sponge which is the basis of my inspirations and drive toward success in anything I strive to accomplish.

On the flip side, the creative part of me loves art.

Art rocks.

No, really!

Everything from the clay bowl or ash tray that children make in their elementary years to the beautiful paintings of Monet and musical compositions of Beethoven.

Do you remember the cool art of Junior Jacquet? I have found another artist that amazes me with his unique view. His name is Yuken Teruya and he transforms common, every day items into art such as...

A toilet paper roll that...

Yuken Teruya toilet paper roll art

becomes a hanging forest...

When I Grow Up...

After it was graded and the child brought it home, she returned to school the next day with the following note:

    Dear Ms. Davis,

I want to be very clear on my child's illustration. It is NOT of me on a dance pole on a stage in a strip joint. I work at Home Depot and had commented to my daughter how much money we made in the recent snowstorm. This drawing is of me selling a shovel..

Slug Bug

Slug Bug

Growing up, whether we saw a Volkswagen Beetle coming, going or parked, we would "slug" the arm of the person driving in the car with us and yell "SLUG BUG!"

Since I was brainwashed that this was a fun game (don't get me wrong because it is fun), I taught it to my daughter too except that I never "slugged" her in the arm. Instead we did more of a "Princess tap" on the arm. I'm sure that doesn't surprise you a bit. Anyway, she loved it and I would often ignore "bugs" so that she would win.

Now she is older and driving, so in a way I have an advantage because I can really look around.

Wrong.

My child has the eyes of an eagle. I think she can see a Volkswagen Beetle fifty miles down the road! I never win!

The car will be silent and then I hear her say softly, "slug bug." She doesn't even punch me in the arm.

It is more like...you lost.

Again.

I taught her too well!

Where are my bifocals?

From a Man's Point of View

Men's meme

It is time for my blog's testosterone injection again. I am actually enjoying having my husband's input twice a week. So Tom is sitting on the couch waiting impatiently for me to ask him the question and then he will dictate his answer to me. His comments will be in BLUE.

"Are you ready Tom?

"Yeah."

"The question is...

What is your favorite discipline tip? Who handles most of the discipline in your home, you or your wife? Why?"
"That's three questions, so...#1 I still believe in spanking."

This really surprised me so I immediately asked, "You do?"

"Yes."

Quite befuddled, I asked him again. "Children? You really believe in spanking children?" I still was quite shocked.

"Oh! Are we talking about children?" he asked and then he started laughing.

GEESH! Men! He truly takes advantage of my gullible nature.

"I'm going to ignore that statement! Now Tom, let's start over and be serious!!!!!!"

"Alright, alright" he said still laughing. "I've had a lot of children. I had nine and lost three. Now, I have inherited Alyssa. So I will comment in reverse order. As far as I'm concerned, the role of disciplining Alyssa is exclusively her mother's responsibility. This is common in a step parent family with an older child. If I had married when she was two or three, that would be a different story.
Alyssa is a special spirit. My role as a stepfather was not to be a disciplinarian, but to be a father image, male influence, and to love her mom. That goes farther than any effort or attempt to redirect or discipline."

"Parents of intact families should share the disciplinarian role and be a united front so that the child can not split the parents for a pardon from one. Regarding my biological children, each would say that I have never spanked them which to my surprise is true. I remember most recently that Jeffrey, in a family gathering, set the record straight that I had never spanked any of them. Jeff has completed his first semester in college and plays viola in the Richmond Symphony. What's to spank about that? On the other hand, they have all needed perhaps more discipline than they received to appreciate consequences."

"A tip to young mothers...When your child is disobedient there must be consistent consequences and follow through with them. Discipline immediately, but never when you are angry."

"The length of time for punishment should be age appropriate. For children under five, a day or two of punishment or restriction is appropriate. Children over five and under twelve can endure and benefit from a week or two. Teens are difficult because their developmental stage is precisely about individuating: i.e. experimenting with values, power, control, and limits. Pay attention, tread lightly, be tolerant, and remain loving."

"As for spouses, discipline is hopeless...well, except for my opening comment."

Sometimes he is so goofy!

A Wormy Feast

Brittany 2009

During our Christmas dinner together, I was reminded of an incident that happened when my niece, Brittany was young. You can imagine how cute she was with her bubbly personality and bouncy red curls. The apple of her auntie's eye!

animated wormBrittany was an inquisitive little girl. We were always reading books or watching shows that taught us things which made us a walking library crossed with the Discovery channel. On top of everything, she was always doing the unexpected.

One day Brittany picked up one of those really tiny, tiny, wiggly worms and plopped it into her mouth.

Oh yes!

Half the worm in her mouth and the other half sticking out between her lips wiggling back and forth and all over the place.

Mom screamed.

My sister (Brittany's mother) screamed.

Then her mother did everything she could to get the worm out of Brittany's mouth...intact.

She did, and the slobbery, wiggly worm was promptly tossed in the toilet I think.

That's funny, but even funnier is that this story came up while we were eating Christmas dinner a few days ago.

It didn't really bother anyone...

except Brittany...

who asked that we change the subject because she was feeling sick.

I guess she doesn't like thinking about a wiggly worm in her mouth.

Just imagine if she had swallowed it!

Window Shades Can Kill Your Children

cords on window blinds

The miniblind industry and consumer product regulatory agencies know that the number of children who accidentally hang themselves on the cords of blinds is extremely high. Over the past thirty years, over 340 children have been strangled to death on the pull cords, inner loops or back loops of blinds (like those found in Roman Shades). There is approximately one death a month from this type of accident.

The Consumer Product Safety Comission announced on December 15, 2009, a recall of 5.5 million blinds for repairs on all roll-up blinds and Roman shades.

I could give you a list of safety tips to help keep your child safe with corded blinds. Why chance the death of your child? My only safety tip is for everyone to throw out all corded safety blinds and never buy them again. If you are going to have blinds in your windows, only buy and own cordless blinds.

cords on window blinds

I do not usually include so many YouTube videos in one post, however, this topic is of utmost importance and each video helps to educate and understand the issue of window shade cording deaths. It is so easy for children to hang themselves. The first video is a mom filming her children at home. When she pans the camera around the room, she sees her three year old child beside the window, cord around his neck, hanging and blue...

Please be hypervigilant with the safety of your children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and friend's children. It only takes four minutes for a child to die while hanging on the cord of a blind.

The Beauty of Sleeping

beautiful children sign

A nap is a short period of sleep, usually in the day time. Naps are frequently taken when one becomes drowsy during the day or otherwise wants to feel awake at a later period of time that day. They are also often frequently taken by small children.

Naps are great on Sunday afternoon...

Image: 1995 Brittany (my niece)

A few sleeping facts:

The Harvard-run Nurses' Health Study has linked insufficient or irregular sleep to an increased risk for heart disease, breast cancer and colon cancer. Erratic sleep has also been researched by other groups that link protein and hormone production fluctuations as a contributing factor associated with these diseases.

"We have in our society this idea that you can just get by without sleep or manipulate when you sleep without any consequences," said Lawrence Epstein, president of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. "What we're finding is that's just not true."

Sleep deprivation is associated with numerous medical illnesses and some serious problems including:
    High blood pressure
    Heart attack
    Stroke
    Obesity
    Psychiatric problems including depression
    Poor quality of life
    Stressed relationships
    Consistent lethargy
    Mental impairment/loss of memory
    Shortened attention span
    Occupational Injury
    Automobile Injury
    Diabetes
    Sexual dysfunction
    Increases perception of pain

How Much Sleep Do You Need?

1-4 Weeks Old 15 ½ - 16 ½ hours per day
1-4 Months Old14 ½ - 15 ½ hours per day
4-12 Months Old14 - 15 hours per day
1-3 Years Old12 - 14 hours per day
3-6 Years Old10 ¾ - 12 hours per day
7-12 Years Old10 - 11 hours per day

Safety - Is It An Illusion?

stranger
This is very important. Don't hide your eyes pretending this doesn't happen and won't happen to you or your family. Don't be ignorant. Instead choose to be aware. This is real.

I believe that we see and hear about violence so often on the news that we become somewhat immune to the fact that it happens every day to normal people living in nice, non-violent neighborhoods...or is there really such a place? This is heartbreaking and almost unbearable to imagine the pain that these families have suffered.

This happens so fast you don't even realize the information just gathered about your child...

• 15% of students are being bullied on a daily basis
• 160,000 kids miss school everyday due to bullying
• Half of all students report being bullied at some time
Tips to help keep your children safe:
  • Have open conversations with your children about every topic including the fact that they can tell you anything, any time.
  • Ensure that your children know that you WILL believe them when they tell you something is wrong.
  • Teach your child not to keep secrets from you.
  • Do not tell the child to "ignore" it. It will make them wonder why they even bothered telling you.
  • It is okay to break the rules in order to remain safe i.e. break windows to escape, scream, yell, bite, etc.
  • Do not blame the victim of any crime.
  • Get all the facts pertaining to the incident including witnesses names.
  • Report the incident to the police.
  • Have the school act as a go between for contact with the bullies parents unless otherwise advised by the police.
  • Teach your children to be assertive. Children who are NOT bullied know how to assert themselves during a confrontation. They have the conflict resolution skills that enables them to solve problems without being aggressive.
  • Role play...seriously.
When my niece Brittany was around the age of six, the schools began to really push "Stranger Danger" and encouraged role playing at home. One afternoon, we decided to role play in the front yard. We told her that Evan, my ex-husband, would walk down the street towards the house and he would pretend to be a stranger. She was to just play in the front yard and when he approached, follow the things she had been taught about safety. I want to interject that the kids NEVER played outside without me sitting and watching them. "Approximately one-third of abductions occurr within one-half block of the victim’s home."

Brittany stood in the middle of the yard and just watched as Evan slowly walked down the street towards our house. When he was about two feet from the edge of the yard, he started running towards Brittany.

I was sitting and observing on the porch holding Alyssa.

Brittany took off running and screaming towards me with terror on her face. Upon reaching me, she collapsed in my arms a sobbing mess. Evan and I held and comforted her. When she was finally able to speak, Brittany said that she was terrified because for a minute it felt real. All she could think about was that someone was trying to get her.

It wasn't our intention to scare her so badly. We just wanted to practice safety and give her tips for her protection. Obviously, besides being a very intelligent child, she also had a very vivid imagination. Now that Brittany has gotten older, she said that deep down she knew it was just Evan, but that it felt so real at the time that he had become just a faceless man out to get her.

We were careful after that not to traumatize her, but the impression had been made forever. I can't say enough about the value of role playing every situation with your children. Role play everything from strangers to being honest enough to return an overpayment to the person at the cash register. Practice until it becomes second nature to them because in a crisis, you don't really have time to think.

Somer Thompson (7 years old) - All 161 sex offenders within the five mile radius of her home have been questioned. 161 within 5 miles?!!!! Somer vanished on her one-mile walk home from school Monday. 7 years old walking a mile alone? The latest story of how police found Somer Thompson here.

When Bad Things Happen to Good People (Mass Market Paperback)

Christians believe that one answer can be found in the Bible (Romans 8:18) "For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us." Adversity, opposition and trials are part of the plan which gives us "choice" and "free agency" which in turns also brings about "consequences" for those actions. Christians also believe that there is the existence of evil which persuades people to choose actions which bring about pain and unhappiness to others. If God intervened each time someone chose to do evil to an undeserving person, the entire plan of giving humans the freedom to make decisions or morally choose goodness would be thwarted.

"Making the decision to have a child -
it's momentous.
It is to decide forever
to have your heart
go walking outside your body."
