Shadowy Reflections

Reflections...

The sun will rise each morning without your permission.

People are wrapped up in their own lives and you may be just a fleeting thought that disappears as quickly as it appeared.

You may search all day for a sign of hope that things will some day be normal again, but you may not find it.

No one stays the same.

Wisdom happens while you're living through trial and error.

Hard work, dedication and loyalty does not always mean you will come out ahead.

There is a strong possibility that even though you treat people with compassion, respect and have been attentive to their needs in the past, they will not reciprocate when you are at your lowest.

More than likely, some day, something or someone will knock you down.

It may feel impossible to stand up again once you have been tossed to the bottom.

Life offers an opportunity for living, not an experience in fairness.

When you become the shadow of yourself, it is hard to find your color again.

It is easier to give up.

The sun will set each evening without your permission.

Is There Life After Death?

April is a big month in my family...

My sister, Audrey, was born on April 3rd.

My dad was born on April 4th.

My daughter, Alyssa, was born on April 15th.

It's the month of births. On the day that we enter into the world, it is an exciting and scary adventure. We have a body and the freedom to make choices. Inevitably, we all make mistakes...some of us learn from them and others do not, but we all are given the opportunity to choose how we live.

Audrey and Alyssa can still enjoy the sun in the morning, but Dad lived all his days already.

Where is Dad?

Dad is no longer living on this earth because he died of a horrible disease called cancer. His physical body is in the cemetery. I can visit and put flowers on his grave, but his body no longer houses his spirit.

Most people agree on that part of living and dying, but there are vast differences in the beliefs of what happens after we die.

Is there life after death?

Do we float up to the sky, sit on clouds and play harps all day?

Do we cease to exist?

There is a really sweet lady at work and when her grandfather died, I went to her office to offer my condolences. During the conversation I said, "Some day you will see him again."

She looked at me quizzically and said, "No, I won't ever see him again."

I was a little taken aback and asked her about what she think happened after we died. She said, "After you die, you name is written in a book, but you cease to exist because all living is over."

"Wow!" I said. "With that kind of belief, what is the motivation to do good?"

"We choose to do good because that is what's right," she said in a matter of fact tone.

I proceeded to tell her that I believed after our body died, our spirit went on to live. Those people who have gone before us will be there to greet me and we will see them when we pass away. I would be held accountable for the choices that I had made while living on Earth. That was part of the motivation for "being good."

Knowing that I will see those people I love again brings me comfort.

It gives me hope of a great reunion some day.

I also feel like my existence and all the good I try to do on this planet isn't for nothing.

Within the next week, my Mom's sister will pass away at the young age of 63. This is the same sister that Mom spoke of in Two Big Eyes In The Window. Aunt Ann's body is shutting down and when everything stops, I believe she will step out of her body and see her parents and all those that have lived before her.

Aunt Ann will be happy. All those who love her that are still living will grieve from the loss. That's how it all happens...birth, life, death.

Do you believe that there is life after death?

"The fear of death follows
from the fear of life.
A man who lives fully
is prepared to die at any time."
~Mark Twain~

Knots Add Character

The whole purpose of planting a tree is to have it grow big and beautiful. However, before the Spring arrives, we prune back branches leaving exposed wood where a branch used to grow. Usually we do this type of pruning for aesthetics to enhance the natural form or to stimulate flowering and fruit growth.

Pruning exposes the tree within.

The health of the tree is also a reason for pruning. Getting rid of damaged or diseased wood can save the life of the tree. Sometimes the branches have been growing for years and once removed, there is a large area exposed which shows the lines of seasonal growth inside the tree.

Pruning shows the circles of life.

Pruning is a tough job and if the saw slips, it can cause a jagged edge or extra chunk of wood to be removed.

Pruning

In time, however, the wood heals leaving behind gnarly scars. These areas never look the same after they have grown over. Each is distinct with intricate bark patterns even if there are several on the same tree.

Gnarly knots

Besides pruning, there are other natural elements such as birds and weather that cause the tree to become scarred. The regrowth and healing is sometimes quick and sometimes it takes quite a long time to recover from the removal of the limbs. However, pruning is necessary.

Other scars on the tree

These knots of scarred wood add character and is the exact kind of lumber I look for when building furniture or doing projects. I like how the scars and knots play with my imagination. I also think that the knobby wood adds to the beauty of whatever I've created.

We are like the tree.

The storms of pain and hard experiences thrash us about leaving behind scars, knobs and knots. With the right attitude, a lesson can be learned from the trials. That knowledge makes us more beautiful and prunes our souls towards becoming a wise, compassionate and selfless person.

Pruning is painful and often very harsh.

Even if the knots left behind after the healing are large, they are marks that prove you have lived...

Loved with every fiber of your body.

Given until the last drop of energy.

Comforted another when your soul cried with exhaustion.

Completely and totally lived.

That makes all the knots worth it.

Knots proved we have lived.

Can you relate with the gnarly tree?

Do you have any knots?

What has life pruning taught you?

Not Just A Blue Jean Imprint

blue jeans

After sitting down at my desk this morning, I reached for my glasses. Just as I was slipping them onto my face, I noticed that the right lens had something on it. Pulling the glasses back off my face, I held them up to the light so that I could see the location of the smudge. However, it wasn't fuzzy at all. Smack dab in the middle of my lens was a perfect fingerprint.

I'm sure it couldn't be anyone's except for my print because they are my glasses. It could even be proven scientifically because every person's fingerprint is different. No two people have the same print which is totally phenomenal if you think about it. Billions of people and every print is different.

All those wiggly lines make up a unique fingerprint for an equally unique individual. No two people think, look or act exactly like another human being - not anyone who has lived, now lives or will ever live on this planet is the same. Each person makes some kind of contribution, print or stamp in history.

When my Dad died on October 15, 2010, I obviously grieved. Even when I was trying to be brave, living without him on Earth was too much pain for me to wrap my mind around.

Today, after seeing that fingerprint on my glasses, I thought about the imprint that Dad made in his life. His family and friends all had a personal relationship with him that was exclusive of all others. Each connected with him in their own way and vice versa.

Day after day Dad lived his life touching other lives along the way and making his historic print on the Earth. What kind of imprint did he make with his existence? It made me contemplate how my life might look when it is over.

I reached into the box of Dad's clothes after I got home tonight and pulled out a pair of blue jeans and a t-shirt. As I drew them close to my face, I could faintly smell his soap. I buried my face in his t-shirt and felt an ache in my chest begin to open.

jeans and t-shirt

Meanwhile, my mind drifted off to a sunny day when I hugged his neck and could smell Old Spice. I lingered in those lovely memories only a moment because the flood gates had opened and my tears were swiftly falling down my cheeks.

Jeans and t-shirts don't last forever and neither do our lives.

Like the hem of our jeans, sometimes we get a little frayed, but we refuse to give up or completely fall apart. We try to hold up our end of the responsibilities that fall on our shoulders and keep on moving along.

frayed jeans

There are many experiences that put a hole into our hearts that can't always be mended. We learn to live with them and hope that others will accept us in our imperfect state.

jeans with hole

Many stitches are visible on the jeans, but there are many more inside. The threads that show on the outside have a different purpose than the hidden stitches inside. Removing a few stitches here and there could be the demise of the whole pair of jeans. So it is with our lives...a hour here and there can totally change our lives for the good or the not so good. We can hide our actions and no one will see them, but eventually every experience has an affect on the outside of our body and the rest of existence.

stitches

Each minute of our life is but a stitch in time and history. How are your stitches holding up to the test of time?

What kind of statement are you making with your life?

Dad may be gone, but he left a whole lot more than just a blue jean imprint on me. I miss you Dad wherever you are tonight.

Life Sucks And Then You Die

Most of the time I offer positive, inspirational and uplifting blogging messages for several reasons:
  • When my daughter reads my blog which is basically my journal writings to her, she will have my comfort even if I am no longer living on this earth.
  • I believe that if I hear, read and speak positive thoughts then my attitude will help me make it through the more difficult mountains in life.
  • I want to positively inspire my readers to believe in their inherent value as human beings and let them know that they are never alone - I too have suffered and understand far more than I have even blogged about thus far.
With that said, I sit in front of my computer monitor feeling like an alien from another planet, completely out of oomph and inspiration. This posting is really for my family because I know at this point they are speechless and do not know how to help me. So if you don't want to know the darker side of The Redhead Riter, there is that little "x" in the top right hand corner that is beckoning your cursor to click it. Otherwise, here I go with the raw emotions...

Let's start with Alyssa's tragedy. Having Alyssa's life hang by a thread for five days in the middle of May changed me as I know it has changed my family in one way or the other. I think as my child lay unconscious in the intensive care unit, a piece of my mind went insane, jumped off a cliff and died.

I was already struggling to financially support my family because my husband was without work, so the financial strain along with the medical tragedy of my only child, proved to be too much for my mind to handle. Even when she was out of the woods and lived, my mind was still in a foggy mess somewhere in another uncharted galaxy.

But...I pushed on and continued to try to be and do my best in all areas of life. My family often wanted me to SNAP out of it and the lecturing has been endless because they don't know what else to do, but it just really made it worse in many ways.

Personally, I think I have failed miserably, but that is irrelevant at this point.

Then in August, after almost a year, my husband gets hired by another firm and I start to feel the weight and responsibility of all the financial obligations lift from my shoulders. I even begin to genuinely feel happy without faking it. I started to make a concerted effort to help my brain get over so much trauma.

It appeared that life just might be stable and be easier.

Appearances are deceiving.

Every day I talked to my Dad a minimum of twenty minutes, but often he would forget that he had already told me of his latest antics or new joke and he would call me back in a few hours to repeat it all again. I was always happy just to hear his voice since I was deprived of that relationship for so many years. So when he called or vice versa, any conversation was better than none. I usually hung on his every word like a first grade little girl. Pathetic isn't it?

I do know that it was Dad's choice to leave me out of his life for so long, but forgiveness means that you simply let it go. I did and that is why I enjoyed years and years of very wonderful phone conversations and visits with him. Forgiveness is so freeing to the heart, mind and spirit.

At that point of my life, I was able to talk to Mom and Dad every single day. I finally felt the healing powers of parents that love me. It is a priceless gift. Something deep inside me was "fixing" itself with each communication.

But my happiness was too short lived and even though my mind was still foggy and shaken from the "Alyssa experience," I was thrust into the fearful and agonizing world of Dad having cancer. Not just any cancer, but two of the most aggressive cancers which manifested in his lungs and bones.

I got on my knees and cried, screamed and agonized with "God's will" which is far over rated. I couldn't pray the "right" Christian prayer. Since Dad was going to die and there was no way to "cure" him, I begged God to take him quickly. I didn't add "thy will be done" to the prayer because I simply wanted Dad to die quickly and not suffer or I wanted a complete miracle.

My soul was tormented with pain. I ached inside with the pain from knowing I was losing Dad and losing the opportunity to make up for lost time even if it was just a notion in my head. All that was heaped on top of still suffering the trauma (diagnosed as PTSD - Post Traumatic Stress Styndrome) from Alyssa's near death. Although I desperately wanted to be selfish and keep Dad here on the earth, I just couldn't pray for him to stay longer while in agonizing cancer pain.

Two months after the cancer diagnosis Dad died. I believe his spiritual body stepped out of his mortal body as he left me behind to cope with the huge gap in my life that only he could fill. All hopes of Dad living with me some day were shattered as he took his last breath. I can't ever lift the phone and hear his voice tell me anything nor can I put my arms around his neck and smell Old Spice. I can't hear him share excitement over cooking a new recipe or laugh at a prank he pulled. I can't make him another Christmas present.

Gone. He is simply gone. Memories in my heart aren't enough and that is all I really have now.

Before I went to Dad's funeral, I put all his clothes in bags to bring home. With his funeral service a few hours away, I lifted clothes that he once wore. They looked like him. They smelled like him. With each piece of clothing, my heart wrenched a little bit more. All I knew was that I needed his clothes more than anything else he owned. I am going to make my sister and I quilts from his clothes so that we can wrap ourselves in all that we have left of him. It is as close to his hug as we will have again. Maybe it will help my heart heal.

The pain of losing Dad has truly been unbearable. I can not find comfort from anyone or anywhere.

I feel hollow.

But it doesn't end there. Oh no, a reprieve was just too much to ask for, I guess. Next, my husband was laid off...again.

It has to be an evil, vicious joke, but I didn't cry or scream. I was really in too much shock and already in a foggy, hollow state, so it just didn't hit me.

Well, it didn't hit me until last Saturday when I decided that "Life Sucks And Then You Die," and I also concluded that God has me on the black list of less desirable children. Since He is an omnipotent being full of grace and light, there is no way that He can "hate" me, but He can surely put me on a black list which is akin to being the black sheep in a family.

I'm sure my mother and all my Christian readers are flipping through their scriptures to tell me differently, but I am not Job and I do not have his strength.

Anyway, two weeks prior to Tom's job loss, Alyssa's dog decided that she would chew off Alyssa's bra strap. Bella already had been caught chewing on underwear, shorts, shirts, plastic, walls, carpet, toilet paper, paper towels...need I continue? We kept looking for this bra strap because it still had both metal clips attached.

Remember, this little dog is LITTLE. Bella is still under six pounds and is a toy poodle in all senses of the word. She just looks like a ball of red fluff.

Never in our wildest dreams did we believe that she could swallow the entire bra strap, but that is what happened. Apparently, it had been in her stomach and then decided to try to take on the rest of the digestive route. So first one metal clamp passed from her stomach into her intestine followed by the strap material. However, the clamp on the other end got hung up at the opening of the stomach. Bella's intestines kept trying to pull it through slowing turning everything into a knotted mess of intestines and stomach.

Bella was dying.

We rushed her to emergency surgery where they had to cut open her stomach and her intestines through a very long incision on her under belly. No one was sure if she would live or die. Bella's intestines didn't want to work and she kept throwing up stomach acid, so it just added to the whole dilemma.

Each moment throughout the week, we have been fearful of her death. Alyssa, of course, also suffers guilt since it was her bra that was eaten. Obviously, Alyssa was freaking out.

Bella
Bella
Bella

Now it is Friday evening and Bella is home...alive. She appears to be out of immediate danger because she has not developed a temperature, continues to eat, drinks from her bowl and best of all, Bella can poop. I guess the proper term is defecate, but I never use that word and Alyssa hates it. We both think it just sounds nasty.

Don't get me wrong...I am very grateful for so many things such as:
  • both Alyssa and Bella are alive
  • my mother is still alive
  • my dad died quickly and didn't have to suffer years of agonizing cancer pain
  • my family loves each other
  • I have a great brother-in-law who loves me like a sister which is huge because as we all know, in-laws don't always treat you like family and it is the basis of many jokes especially the mother-in-law jokes
  • my daughter has a great work ethic and loves her job and career path
  • I work for a good company
  • I have a roof over my head, clothes on my back, shoes on my feet and food on my table
  • I know why we come to the earth and where we go after we die
Those are some major things to be thankful and I am very grateful for them all.

But.

I am worn out emotionally.

I just can't take any more trauma because I feel like I'm going to lose my mind.

Dad popped into my mind today and I thought, "I bet he is having a great day. He might even be laughing and talking to my grandparents. Dad is happy and I feel like life sucks."

Yeah, I know it could be so much worse and that is my fear. I'm afraid to know what terrible tragedy is going to happen next. I don't want to have to cope with anything else.

I want to be off God's black list. Aren't I as good as other people who are breezing through life happy, healthy and financially strong? Doesn't God want to help me? Do I deserve this much pain? I know the "right" answers to those questions, but I sure don't feel like any of it applies to me.

My advice is that I don't have any advice. Right now I am clinging to the things my mother taught me when I was a young child...

Matt. 6: 19-21
19 Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal:
20 But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:
21 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
So my dear family and Alyssa, I'm having a very tough time just existing. I can't do or be all that I used to do or be...yet...I hope. I am trying desperately to believe that God still loves me and that I am not doomed to live a life of constant turmoil or unhappiness. I apologize that I can not do it all any more and that I might be somehow failing you. I feel so inadequate and defeated. I feel as though I have failed you. I feel as though I have failed myself. I have no idea why I feel this way, but I do.

Alyssa, please remember the many miracles that saved your life and Bella's life. There were many undeniable and unexplainable things that happened. Your Father in Heaven loves you and keeps on blessing your life.

I'm tired. I am very, very tired.

Thank you for being my family. I love you all very much.

My dear readers and friends...Please let me say thank you for being there for me with hugs, lunch, snacks (shhhhh), emails, messages, phone calls and chatting on Twitter, Facebook and in my community. I know you all care and appreciate your efforts on my behalf.

Please know that I am trying very hard to "be myself" again. I feel so lost and empty.

Matt. 5: 3-12

3 Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
4 Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.
5 Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.
6 Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.
7 Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.
8 Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.
9 Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.
10 Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness’ sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
11 Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.
12 Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.

Tell The Truth Thursday - Yellow Cake With Chocolate Frosting Recipe

Tell The Truth Thursday

Welcome to "Tell The Truth Thursday" where the question that has been posted in my right side bar gets answered by me and you! Did you prepare your post and are you ready to drop your URL into the Linky so that we all can follow? Grab the thumb above linking it back to this blog posting and let's get started...

The question this week is :
What is your favorite food/best recipe??

I love yellow cake with a vanilla flavor
and this is "one" of my favorite recipes.
Actually, it is my own recipe!

In order to prevent duplicating an ingredient
or not including it at all,
I measure out all the ingredients
before combining them.

This is one of my scrumptious,
delicious,
yummy
yellow cake recipes.
It is a "coarse" and "heavy" cake and especially delicious
soaked with fresh fruit instead of iced with chocolate.

I only iced this one piece of cake for the blog
and to make make icing since Alyssa
likes to eat plain icing without cake.
The rest of the cake was turned into
my great grandmother's recipe
which I will show you in a future post.

The Redhead Riter's
Yellow Cake #1

Ingredients:

2 cups of sugar

making a yellow cake

2-1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon salt

making a yellow cake

A heaping 1/4 cup vanilla instant pudding

making a yellow cake

3-1/4 cups all purpose flour

making a yellow cake

2 sticks unsalted butter, softened

making a yellow cake

1 cup buttermilk at room temperature,
1/4 (plus a tad) cup milk at room temperature
all in the same measuring cup

making a yellow cake

4 large eggs at room temperature

making a yellow cake

Add the 3 teaspoons of vanilla extract to the milk

making a yellow cake

3/4 to 1 cup of sour cream

Directions:

In a mixer add the sugar,

making a yellow cake

baking powder,
salt,

making a yellow cake

flour and
vanilla instant pudding.
Mix completely.

making a yellow cake

Add the butter and
beat with with an electric mixer
on a low speed
for about a minute.

making a yellow cake

Beat on a medium speed
until the mixture resembles coarse sand.

making a yellow cake

While it is beating,
prepare a 9 x 13 cake pan.
My pan isn't dark or glass.
Rub a small amount
of butter all over the pan
with a paper towel
making sure that

all surfaces of the inside of the
pan are covered.
Add a handful of flour.

making a yellow cake

Shake it around the pan until
all the butter is coated
with flour.
Throw away the excess flour.

making a yellow cake

Start preheating the oven
to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

Beautiful mixture so far isn't it?
I'm sure it tastes better than coarse sand too.

making a yellow cake

Add the milk and vanilla mixture
and the sour cream
while the mixer is on low.

Mix for 30 seconds.

making a yellow cake

Keep the mixer on low

making a yellow cake

and add one egg.
Beat for 30 seconds.
Increase to a medium speed and
beat for 30 more seconds.

making a yellow cake

Add the second egg.
Beat for 30 seconds on low.
Increase to a medium speed and
beat for 30 more seconds.

making a yellow cake

Add the third egg.
Beat for 30 seconds.
Increase to a medium speed and
beat for 30 more seconds.
Then do the same thing
to the fourth and final egg.

making a yellow cake

Stop the mixer.
Scrape the sides.
Mix for 20 seconds
on high.
Just 20 seconds
and that is all.
The mixer is getting tired.

making a yellow cake

Scoop the thick batter into the prepared pan.

making a yellow cake

Smooth the top.
It looks so fluffy.

making a yellow cake

Make sure you don't scrape the bowl
too good or you won't be able
to have a bite to eat.

making a yellow cake

Bake for 50 minutes on 350 degrees Fahrenheit
in the middle of the oven.
That means that the rack
should be in the middle of the oven
and the pan should be in the middle of the rack.

Clean the mixing bowls,
spoons, spatula and measuring cups.
Wipe the counter.

I know that most people test for doneness with a toothpick,
but I use a very sharp knife.
The hole it leaves doesn't matter
because it is covered with icing anyway.
The cake should be brown and
it will have pulled away from the edge of the pan
a little tiny bit.
Remove the cake from the pan and
cool on cake racks.

Tip:
After the cake is cooled,
you can put the cake back
into the same baking pan.
Some baking pans have nice lids.

We prefer to ice the cake one piece at a time
since some people like more icing than others,
so I put the cake back into the pan
and cover tightly with aluminum foil
because I don't have a nifty lid
for my baking pan.
I'll give you one guess
to figure out who likes the most icing.

making a yellow cake

Now it is time to prepare
the chocolate frosting,
however, I do not have any
measurements because I make
the frosting by looks,
feel and taste.

Ingredients and Directions:

Shake a can of evaporated milk vigorously
and open it.
If you shook it enough,
you will see pretty little bubbles.

making a yellow cake

The mixer has rested long enough.
In a mixing bowl,
add powdered sugar,
Hershey's cocoa,
and a dash of salt.

making a yellow cake

Mix until all ingredients
are well incorporated.

making a yellow cake

Add 1 stick of butter, softened.

making a yellow cake

Tip:

If you want your butter to soften
faster, cut it up into slices.
Another Tip:
Never,
Never,
Never,
Ever,
put the butter in the microwave
or set it on top of the hot oven.
Did you get that Alyssa?
Never.
Never.
Period.

making a yellow cake

Turn the mixer on low and
begin to slowly add the evaporated milk.

making a yellow cake

Add about 1/3 of the can at first.
Mix on low.
If it looks dry,
add more milk.
I ended up using 1/2 the can.

making a yellow cake

After the milk is well incorporated
and before you mix it into fluff,
taste it.
If you need to add more cocoa,
now is the time.
Just don't forget to keep the mixer
on low or you will
have a mess like me.
I created a chocolate cloud,
but that isn't bad.
Imagine a world filled
with chocolate clouds.
Yummmmm.

making a yellow cake

Of course, the cake will still be hot
when you have finished making the icing.
You can put the icing in an air tight container
until ready to use.
If you like hot cake,
cut and ice a piece for yourself.

making a yellow cake

Admire the beauty.
Smell the combination of
vanilla and chocolate.
Take a mental picture
so that the next time you become ill,
you can recall the memory.
Now eat it
s-l-o-w-l-y.
Let the smooth chocolate frosting
coat your mouth.

making a yellow cake

Yeah, I love to eat the food I cook.
It is really quite a dilemma sometimes.

**********

Did you know that life is like
a yellow cake with chocolate frosting?
New experiences are added to our lives
and get mixed with the old experiences
helping us grow and progress.
We fluff up with knowledge.
If we keep life in balance,
in the end,
we will have created
and lived
a beautiful life.

Licking my plate clean and leaving no crumbs,
